Retreat to Space
04:24
|
|||
brother slept outside, said it was alright
called him last night, said he was doin' fine
love how you said it went, eyes closed, heart is bent
over the chair again
living inside my head, living inside my head
don't you love to see a love so obscene?
take it personally how people get what they need
last time I heard from him went walking one cold morning
heard the birds at sunrise sing 'love is a simple thing'
but I'm hung up on gravity, on keeping things so steady
that's how I know this is real, how can I trust what I feel?
body lives in apartments, baby's brain is in a starship
try to eat right, get over it
but we're sleeping outside, heads full of shit
but we're built to handle it, love on this cold planet
take what you can't admit
up all night, pray for starship
pray for starship

Friend
04:33
|
|||
careful girl you're on to something, wanted in at least one state
almost caught you rare bird baby but I woke up too late
and now it's pouring rain
never knew what you wanted except when it came to me
and it was poisoning and it was dancing, and now I'm starving
one day I'll be so thin that I'll slide under your door
shifting like a slipstream you can't feel the pull anymore
and everything will still be a mess and then I'll be like before
we'll see through all the past lives and wonder what all the hype was for
I've been laying low lately
while she's out over oceans offering
I'm hiding under rocks in cold streams
searching for a safe-face and achievable dreams
but one day I'll get so high and I'll think that it's the end
flying over faces I can tell it's all pretend
and I'll feel famous, jealous, wasted, love is mine to lend
and you'll be there so unaware and you'll say I'm your best friend.

Car Song
03:33
|
|||
I am a ribbon I unfurl like the smoke of a cig on the interstate
I am a river the saltwater one we passed way back in Connecticut
and I'm a bright light baby vacant when you needed it
bed turned down, surround sound, ten channels in a nameless town
you could measure my love in miles, miles, miles
got me feeling like a stowaway child
we'll get where we're going in awhile
Yellow headlights, yellow moon rise in a western sky
tried to light it couldn't find it it was dark that night
tried to hide me in the backseat speeding down lake street
stopped at two trees to shoot the breeze, rest easy on a hillside
you could measure my love in miles, miles, miles
got me feeling like a stowaway child
we'll get where we're going in awhile
to find out it's up to you, it's up to you
to get out, it's up to you, it's up to you
there's nothing a long road won't show to you, show to you
speeding, heart racing, kissing in a car-park, Walmart wasteland.
you could measure my love in miles, miles, miles
got me feeling like a stowaway child
we'll get where we're going in awhile

Love Bird Lullaby
03:13
|
|||
If I was a sick bird would you pick me up with your loving hands?
take me back to your father's land, do everything that you can?
or would you tie me up in a white sheet, fear of god coming over me,
take me back where there's metal and weeds, and throw me down 'till you can't see?
if neither is easy, well love isn't free.
kill it with kindness, or bury the beauty.
and all the fight, comes in at night
when I'm too stoned to see it right
and all the love I've ever known
seems come and gone
or on my phone
and everything I wanna do seems overdone
except for you.

Desert Moon
04:20
|
|||
tell me, tell me something
you could say anything and I'd keep dreaming
lover, loves me tender, it's been a bender I can't remember
like sleepwalking on a train
speeding down a long hill I see the roadkill
It spells the gospel
green new England, Cat Skill mountains
holy winter, do you need her?
maybe I just need a new mirror.
cuz I wanna see a desert moon,
a sunny year, pacific blue
it's not my fault if it's lost on you
I've said enough to fill this room for a lifetime
our house is a very, very fine house
with cats in the yard, life hasn't been too hard
I'll sing to you nightly, you'll say that you love me
then I'll light a fire and burn up beside her
cuz I know I can always get higher
cuz I wanna see a desert moon,
a sunny year, pacific blue
it's not my fault if it's lost on you
I've said enough to fill this room for a lifetime
and I'm buying flowers for the first time
the snake is catching my eye, it's telling me a good lie
that if I say goodbye I'll be fine, I'll be fine
cuz I wanna see a desert moon,
a sunny year, pacific blue
if I want more will I lose you?
the dream I'm in could be ending soon or last a lifetime.

Anywhere, Ohio
04:28
|
|||
drove to the midwest, packed up the drums and my best dress
to play in some basements with all the metal heads
spent my summer in a car playing shows, friends are far
no need to cry though, we'll listen to all the songs about Ohio.
Seen a lot of lakes now, everywhere's the same somehow
may as well buy some land near my mom and quit the band.
but I'm held to the spot, by every place that I'm not
pine tree screaming, desert dreaming
so I'll tie up my lover's hair and we'll pick out what to wear
throw all the clothes on the corner chair, we could be anywhere
we could be anywhere as long as we have friends to share, love,
and take care of the cat when I'm not there.
I could be anywhere.
When I imagine it, it's not a spaceship
it's a witch in the attic
pink moon in the backyard
holy eclipse.
